Rabies is an infectious viral disease that affects the nervous system. It is transmitted by a bite or saliva from a rabid animal. Recent cases of rabid bats throughout the state, as well as foxes, are a good reminder to keep your pet, including cats, who are more likely to play with a sick bat, up to date on their rabies vaccinations!
The arrival of warmer weather means more time outside for you and your pets. But even in your own back yard, there are some potential hazards that could get in the way of the fun.
Every year, there are approximately 4.5 million people bitten by dogs, with children between the ages of five and nine the most likely to be bitten. The good news is that dog bites *are* preventable. It’s up to people, not dogs, to stop dog bites.
Each legislative session the OVMA and its lobbying team review and monitor a wide range of legislation -- from animal welfare to business to veterinary-specific bills. Following is a look at but a handful of the 30+ pieces of legislation your Association has tracked thus far.

These injectable fluids are being recalled as a precautionary measure; because of departures from customary sterility procedures, sterility cannot be entirely assured.

If your dog or cat is itching and scratching, fleas are a likely culprit. Flea season usually begins in spring and lasts through the summer, but fleas can survive year round in western Oregon's moderate climate. Fleas that live on your pet can easily spread to your house or yard and vice versa, so it's important to treat both your pet and your pet's environment.
Each summer at the Oregon State Fair, we are reminded that fairgoers love their animals and love the opportunity to talk to veterinarians, technicians and assistants about caring for their animals. We need you to make this another successful year of public outreach at the Fair. Help the OVMA promote your profession!
