OVMA Committee Creating Veterinary Hospice Guidelines
An OVMA ad hoc committee on veterinary hospice care, chaired by Dr. Bob Franklin, developed guidelines and presented its recommendations to the board at its June meeting. The BOD approved the guidelines.

Iams Veterinary Dry Formulas & Eukanuba Naturally Wild, Pure, and Sensitive Skin Formulas Recalled: Salmonella Risk
The Procter & Gamble Company is recalling additional veterinary and some specialized dry pet food (Iams and Eukanuba brands) because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. No Salmonella-related illnesses have been reported.

Get the Facts: Protect Your Pets & Family from Salmonella
Recent media reports have focused on the Salmonella-related recall of a number of pet food products, and a manuscript recently published in the journal Pediatrics (Behravesh CB, Ferraro A, Deasy M, et al. Human Salmonella infections linked to contaminated dry dog and cat food, 2006-2008. Pediatrics 2010; 126: 477-483. ) reported on 79 cases of human Salmonella infection from 2006-2008 associated with contaminated dry dog and cat food. This is the first report of human illnesses linked to dry pet foods.

Mice Direct Recalls Frozen Mice, Rats and Chicken: Salmonella Contamination May Have Sickened 30 Humans
Mice Direct announced a recall of frozen rats, mice and chicks. Thirty humans in 17 states may have become ill with salmonellosis potentially as a result of the frozen reptile feed.

Iams Veterinary Formulas Feline Renal Dry Cat Food (5.5 lb) Bags: Two Lots Recalled Due to Salmonella
Procter & Gamble Co. has recalled two lots of Iams brand prescription renal dry cat food because it could be contaminated with Salmonella. The products are available by prescription through veterinary clinics.

Cryptococcus gattii: Cases in Oregon
In 1999, a rare fungus was identified in British Columbia and, in 2004, the first case of the fungus in a human was identified in the Pacific Northwest. The fungus, Cryptococcus gattii, (or C gattii), is a new strain of the fungus, which, in very rare cases, causes a treatable infection in humans and animals.

Feline’s Pride has expanded its recall of Feline’s Pride Raw food with ground bone for cats and kittens, Natural Chicken Formula, Net Wt. 2.5 lbs. (1.13 kg., 40 oz.) to include product produced on 6/21/10 (in addition to product produced on 6/10/10), because it may be contaminated with Salmonella.
