Myxomatosis Spreading in Oregon Rabbits
The Brush Bunny population this year is exploding. In Oregon, these wild rabbits are the carrier of the virus that causes myxomatosis. There have already been cases of myxomatosis this spring in rabbits housed outdoors. It is expected to be a particularly bad year for the transmission of this disease. Veterinarians recommend that all rabbits be kept indoors with screened windows and doors to prevent access to mosquitoes. This disease has a 100% mortality rate.

FDA Announces Availability of Vetsulin for Critical Needs Dogs and Cats
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a plan to address concerns regarding the supply of Intervet/Schering Plough Animal Health’s (Intervet) Vetsulin (porcine insulin zinc suspension), a product used to treat diabetes in dogs and cats. FDA is allowing Intervet to offer a limited supply of Vetsulin through their Vetsulin Critical-Need Program. The supply is only to be used for a critical-need dog or cat that, in the medical judgment of the pet’s veterinarian, cannot be effectively managed on another insulin product.

USDA Veterinary Medical Loan Repayment Program
The USDA has opened the application period for the Veterinary Medical Loan Repayment Program. Applications are due by June 30, 2010. The VMLRP will pay up to $25,000 each year towards qualified educational loans of eligible veterinarians who agree to serve in a NIFA designated veterinarian shortage situation for a period of three years.
