On October 5, the Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter in Hillsboro confirmed a case of Feline Panleukopenia (Feline Distemper). A kitten that was adopted at the shelter died, and then tested positive for the disease.
The shelter has heard from local veterinarians about several apparent cases throughout our county in recent weeks. This is the first animal from the shelter that has shown signs of the illness.
The shelter's cattery will be closed through at least Monday, October 12, 2009. They have euthanized animals with any signs of illness, and are currently observing those that appear entirely healthy. They are also doing a top-to-bottom disinfection with Trifectant and bleach.
The shelter is contacting all people who have adopted cats from the shelter in the past two weeks to advise them of the situation.
