Kasel Associated Industries of Denver, CO is voluntarily recalling its Nature's Deli Chicken Jerky Dog Treats product because it may be contaminated with Salmonella. This product was distributed to Sam's Club stores in several states. Not originally distributed to Oregon.

ZuPreem®, under parent company Premium Nutritional Products, Inc. is voluntarily recalling the 11/30/13 and the 11/13 expiration date codes of ZuPreem Medium/Large and Large FruitBlend™ With Natural Fruit Flavors maintenance formula bird foods. This voluntary recall is being initiated because two lots may contain calcium levels higher than the recommended level.

Boots & Barkley Beef Bully Sticks Sold at Target Recalled Due to Salmonella Concerns

Kasel Associated Industries of Denver, CO has recalled its Boots & Barkley 6 Count 5 Inch American Beef Bully Sticks product because it may be contaminated with Salmonella. This product was sold at Target stores. Salmonella can sicken animals that eat these products and humans are at risk for salmonella poisoning from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the pet products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

FDA Updates Consumer Information on Pet Illnesses Linked to Jerky Treats: Agency Has Received Reports of 360 Canine Deaths and One Feline Death

The Food and Drug Administration has received over 2,200 reports of illness in pets that may be related to jerky treats. Despite repeated tests since 2007, FDA scientists have been unable to detect any toxin responsible for the these illnesses. The FDA's cautionary warning refers to chicken jerky products that are imported from China. These dried chicken jerky products, intended for dogs, may also be sold as tenders, strips or treats. After receiving reports of illness, the FDA is now also investigating duck and sweet potato jerky treats.

State Fair Contest Winner: Congratulations Sharon Harvey and Thing 1 & Thing 2!

During the recent Oregon State Fair, we held the Pesky Parasites contest. Visitors to our booth who answered 5 questions about parasites correctly were entered into a drawing to win $50 towards a fecal exam for their pet with their veterinarian. Ms. Sharon Harvey of Salem was the winner!

Zoonotic Diseases & Rodents

Since 1993, there have been 18 hantavirus cases in Oregon, including two cases this year (Linn and Jefferson Counties). And there have been six cases of plague in humans in Oregon since 1995--most recently, a Crook County man contracted the disease. He was hospitalized and is now recovering. Another person who contacted the same cat also contracted the disease and is also recovering.
