Each year the OVMA formally welcomes incoming first year students to the veterinary profession during a White Coat Ceremony at Oregon State University. During this special event, each incoming student is “cloaked” with a white laboratory coat, a traditional symbol of the medical sciences, and presented with their first stethoscope.
Twenty-three years ago, the OVMA became the first state veterinary association to present each first year student with a White Coat. Through this meaningful ritual, these future veterinarians become more aware of their professional responsibilities and are encouraged to embrace the obligations inherent in the profession: to be excellent in science, to be compassionate, and to lead lives of uprightness and honor. One conveyed message is that veterinarians should care as well as cure.
This year’s ceremony will take place on Monday, September 19, 2022. And we are asking veterinarians to consider participating in the event by making a general donation or to sponsor a specific student who you know is in the incoming class.
Please make your donation today. Priced at just $145 each, it is a wonderful, affordable way to personally welcome a first year veterinary student.
