Oregon State Fair: Volunteers Needed for 2016 Fair

Each summer at the Oregon State Fair, we are reminded that fairgoers love their animals and love the opportunity to talk to veterinarians, technicians and assistants about caring for their animals.

Volunteers from the veterinary profession are needed to make this another successful year of public outreach at the Fair.

Booth Theme

This year, the OVMA booth will focus on recognizing the signs of pain in pets, equine and large animals, as well as traditional/non-traditional treatments, and first aid for emergencies.

Volunteer Duties & Guidelines

  • You will receive free admission to the Fair, the chance to win a fun gift card, and our sincere thanks!
  • In order to maximize coverage to meet the staffing requirements set forth by Fair management, we need ONE volunteer for each 2 hour shift.
  • If you want to pair up to volunteer with a colleague, we ask that you take TWO 2 hour shifts.
  • Free Passes: There are three ways to get a free pass for a guest to join you at the Fair!
    1. Be one of the first 25 volunteers to sign up for a two hour shift.
    2. Sign up to work more than one two hour shift on the same day.
    3. Sign up for the 8 pm - 10 pm shift on any day of the Fair.
  • Members of the veterinary profession and OSU CVM students/faculty are encouraged to volunteer. We regret that we cannot accept volunteer requests from the general public.
  • Volunteers talk with fairgoers and answer general questions about animal care and the exhibit. In addition, volunteers are asked to keep the booth organized, materials replenished, etc.
  • As a volunteer, you are the face of the OVMA and also represent the profession to the public. As such, you are asked to wear semi-casual or professional working attire. White coats are nice, although not required.
  • Outside of the guest admission passes available as noted above, we regret that cannot provide free fair admission to family members or guests of volunteers.
  • Please note that parking at the Fairgrounds is $5. Public transportation, offsite and street parking is also an option.

Plan a Day at the Fair for Your Practice Team

Plan a Day at the Fair for your practice team! In past years, we've had practices send several members of their team as a group to volunteer in the OVMA booth for several shifts or a whole day. Team members work the booth in 2 hour shifts, then enjoy the sights and sounds of the Fair with their coworkers. It's a great team-building exercise that also allows you the opportunity to share your team's veterinary knowledge with the public. Contact Raina directly to set up a Day at the Fair for your practice team.

Make the Most of Your Free Fair Admission

Schedule your shift for the day when your favorite performer is in concert. Check out special events or exhibits you've had your eye on. Make a day of it!

Service Animals in Training

We hope to have friends from Canine Companions for Independence Cascade Chapter and Willamette Valley Paws for People (raising puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind) visiting the booth. Check the schedule for their times and come get some puppy kisses!

How to Sign Up

Please send us an e-mail with your name, clinic name and address, phone number, and date and time of the shift you'd like to volunteer for, or call the OVMA office at (800) 235-3502.
