Compendium of Veterinary Standard Precautions for Zoonotic Disease Prevention in Veterinary Personnel

The National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians Veterinary Infection Control Committee 2010 has published the Compendium of Veterinary Standard Precautions for Zoonotic Disease Prevention in Veterinary Personnel PDF.

The VSP outlined in this Compendium are routine infection control practices designed to minimize transmission of zoonotic pathogens from animal patients to veterinary personnel in private practice. The Compendium was first published in 20081 in response to a growing recognition of the occupational risks inherent in veterinary practice and the need for infection control guidance for veterinarians.

The 2010 document includes an updated model infection control plan that can be adapted to individual practices and updated guidance on the use of personal protective equipment. Although the Compendium focuses largely on personal protective equipment and actions, a multifaceted approach to workplace safety that incorporates environmental engineering control measures, appropriate administrative policies, and personal protective actions is recommended.
